Japan Provides US$1,390,117 for Cluster Munition, Landmines and Unexploded Ordnances Clearance

The Government of Japan will provide a total of US$1,390,117 to a recipient organization under the framework of the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects. The Grant Contract was signed today between H.E. Mr. UENO Atsushi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia, and the representative of the recipient organization to carry out the following projects:

'Reconstruction Support with Cluster Munitions Disposal in Stung Treng: RSCS (Year 3)' (US$696,397)

Recipient: Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS) In this project, JMAS will demine 470 hectares of cluster munition-contaminated areas while instructing the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) on efficient and safe cluster munition clearance methods. Additionally, the project will provide landmine risk avoidance education for local residents and offer agricultural technology and management training for farmers.

'Reconstruction Support with Demining in Banteay Meanchey: RSDB (Year 3)' (US$693,720)

Recipient: JMAS In this project, JMAS will clear 180 hectares of landmines and unexploded ordnances (UXOs) contaminated areas while transferring efficient and safe clearance methods for mines and UXOs to CMAC. The project will also provide landmine risk avoidance education. Moreover, farmers will have opportunities to learn rice cultivation techniques and develop model farms on the cleared land.

The Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects started in Cambodia in 2002 to support activities by Japanese NGOs aimed at helping Cambodia's reconstruction and development efforts at the grassroots level. Since 2002, the Government of Japan has provided over US$52 million for 154 projects, primarily in the fields of primary education, health, agriculture, and mine clearance in Cambodia.
